Toy Story 3

With the box office topping successes of both Toy Story and Toy Story 2, Woody’s third return to the silver screen certainly has big cowboy boots to fill (figuratively of course). Story developers made the interesting choice to allow for the actual passage of time in the script between the third movie and its two predecessors, with former toy enthusiast Andy, the now longtime owner of both Woody and Buzz Lightyear, now seventeen years old and college bound, having little use for the toys of his childhood. Woody, Buzz and company have been bracing for this transition for some time, however when they are rounded up in a bag for storage, Andy’s mother mistakes them for garbage casting them out of Andy’s room and into the world on their own. Woody is unable to convince his fellow toys that they weren’t meant for the trash as the entire gang sets out for a new chapter in this already well chronicled playtime adventure. The script is very craftily written to make the motives and plotlines relevant and believable, despite the challenge of the long layoff between the second and third films. Obviously the first obstacle is justifying why any singular person would hang on to a chest full of toys for 15 years (since the original movie’s release in 1995). Instead of taking a Simpsons approach with characters that fail to age despite the developing world around them, writers seamlessly wove realistic developments into the story, things any kid turned young adult can relate to at a transitional time in one’s life. In doing so, Toy Story 3 becomes a movie not only for young fans, but the teenage and 20something year old fans of old. Equally impressive, the movie was able to talk almost all of the familiar big star voices into reprising their roles as well. Though it may have been more than a decade since the franchise saw its previous movie released, Toy Story’s latest production simply doesn’t miss a beat and is a must see for fans everywhere.
