Twenty three years in waiting and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 80s classic finally has a worthy sequel. Original Predator fans will be pleased to know the failed follow up sequels to the franchise’s early success are ignored like veal at a PETA convention. Producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal stressed their desire to take the series back to its roots, believing the Alien vs. Predator movie gimmick had portrayed the predator species as too cartoonish, undermining the suspense filled violence and action that made Predator a fan favorite. The script for Predators was actually first drafted in 1994, however 20th Century Film reneged their original interest in the idea once the sizeable budget figures surfaced. A full fifteen years later, the studio came around on the idea out of the blue and contacted Rodriguez to fast track the movie for production. Though Fox revived life in the lost script, Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios produced the film, in order to maintain more creative control and avoid another flop for the franchise, with Fox still in charge of distribution.Though the script was originally written in 1994 and the first movie is now of legal drinking age, the new film takes place in modern day, not attempting to recreate or imitate any late 80s to mid 90s cinematic staples. However, the movie does pay subtle homage to its namesake both on-screen and in dialogue. The story is set around a ragtag group of killers from various native countries and walks of life, all of whom enter a jungle after a flash of light and a subsequent free fall. The unlucky gang of misfits soon discovers they are stuck in an alien game preserve, hunted by the predators species for amusement and bloodlust. Using their lethal talents to play defense as opposed to offense for the first time, the group must ban together to survive in this kill-or-be-killed blockbuster.
