Though the initial reviews for this summer thrill ride have sent mixed signals, perhaps this movies biggest fault is that it didn’t come out 5 years ago. Heck, there was a time in Hollywood when a series of home gardening tips documentary hosted by the A-list royalty might have pushed its way towards number one on opening weekend. Whether modern audiences aren’t as easily seduced by star power (doubtful) or Cruise and Diaz have just past their peak, Knight and Day simply isn’t living up to its billing as a true summer blockbuster. In and of itself, the movie isn’t half as bad as advertised. The key to enjoying the film is managing your expectations. What you can expect is a light, fast paced and ultimately enjoyable flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Don’t buy your ticket expecting a deeply intense undercover spy suspense or a romping laugh fest, but that’s not to say don’t buy your ticket. This is Tom Cruise in an action movie, but it isn’t Mission Impossible; and while we have Cameron Diaz playing an affable girl with a complicated love interest, this is no There’s Something About Mary. And it’s certainly no mind burning exercise like Vanilla Sky, starring both. Whether you’re a fan of Cruise or Diaz, both are still capable of delivering exactly what these roles call for. To get the most out of your movie going, just sit back, relax and enjoy the film’s likable quality, without thinking too deeply about the logistics.Cruise plays Roy Miller, a typically charming secret agent, caught up in a complicated ordeal somewhere between the CIA, FBI and common sense. June Havens, Diaz’s character, is what appears to be an everyday girl caught up in the ensuing madness, simultaneously terrified, excited and amused by the twists and turns the adventure takes. Struggling to balance truth against trust, the pair chooses to stick together to survive, ironically not unlike their movie careers, which seem to be winding down as people lose interest with each passing film.
